Pocket Gopher (Android)

★★⯪☆☆

Pocket Gopher (not to be confused with the JavaME app of the same name) is even simpler than DeBurrow or DiggieDog, but it’s more usable than either because it follows UI conventions more closely. You can type in a full URL or fix a typo. You can download files. It has bookmarks, history and dark mode. (Actually it only has dark mode.) The main thing missing is that it won’t pick up Gopher links from other apps.

The weirdest thing about using it is that the system back button works as the back button, but what looks like a toolbar back button is really the home button. (In this case “home” means your list of bookmarks.)

Unfortunately, Pocket Gopher is old enough that compatibility with modern Android versions has been slipping away. I’m not sure it’s ever been on the Play Store. F-Droid archived it in May. The last couple of releases on GitHub (2017-2019) only shipped as source, letting F-Droid do the packaging. I tried installing the last release on three different Android devices, and only one of them (running Android 13) was able to even install it.
