DiggieDog

★★⯪☆☆

Another basic gopher client, similar to DeBurrow, but with different quirks. Bookmarks and history are supported, you can set your home page, it’s visually clean-looking with icons for folders, text docs, web links, etc. (but no dark mode), and supports downloading files. DiggieDog accepts gopher links from other apps, and sends non-gopher links out to the system, so you can jump between your web browser, gopher and Gemini clients seamlessly.

But the interface is awkward. You go to a new server using a pop-up, not by typing in the URL bar, so you can’t fix a typo or go directly to a specific document. The Home button doesn’t go to your home page, it sets it. The back button replaces the menu button, so in order to get to your bookmarks or history, you have to hit the back button a bunch of times until you get back to where you started. (At least the system back button works as expected, unlike in DeBurrow.) And the settings dialog features options to “Automatically repair urls” (huh?) and enable JavaScript (which isn’t a thing with Gopher.)

It is the only Gopher client I’ve found that’s on the Play Store. If you just want to check out Gopher and get a sense of how it works, DiggieDog is fine for that. But Lagrange (primarily Gemini, but handles Gopher too) is a lot more usable.

Available from Play Store.
