- Eye of the Mall
In downtown San Francisco, there’s a multi-level shopping mall with an atrium and a skylight. If you stand in the dead center of the atrium and look up, it resembles an eye, looking down at you through a giant microscope. This was taken during WonderCon 2009. Years later, I posted it for a February 2015 […]
- Location, Location, Location
Two storefronts in a mall. One is MAC Cosmetics. Right next to it is the Apple Store.
- Reflections of Manhattan Village
An outdoor mall extension completed in 2020. Which wasn’t exactly ideal timing. The courtyard was at least someplace they could set up chairs and signs reminding you to keep your distance. I saw a few people walking through on their way to somewhere else (like I was), and could hear an exercise class running in […]
- Bar and Grille
The outside of the former Great Maple restaurant at Del Amo Fashion Center. It opened with the new upscale wing of the mall, and closed suddenly about a year later. (Like, people showed up to work and the door was locked.) Nothing’s moved in since then, and of course nothing’s likely to move in for […]
- Closed Again
I stopped by the mall the other day to pick up dinner at one of the restaurants that’s open to the outside. The mall interior, however, is closed again as California has re-shuttered indoor gathering spots to slow down the resurgent coronavirus.
- Whatever That Means
So what exactly is a “coastal modern” parking structure and why is it so great?
- The Slowly Emptying Mall: Anaheim Garden Walk
You’d never guess from the busy restaurants out front, but there’s not much else in the rest of this mall. It never quite filled in after it opened.
- It’s beginning to look a lot like…medieval weaponry?
I’ve seen dangerous-looking Christmas decorations at the mall before, but at least those looked like…well, Christmas decorations.
- Cryptic Store
A mall mystery has been solved…or has it? Thoughts on brand recognition, target audience and the use of icons instead of words in signage.
- Overheard at Closing Time
Teenage surliness knows no bounds, no matter how pleasant the voice on the PA system.
- Unexpected Shower
Bad idea of the day: I’ll be back before the rain starts again. No need to bring my umbrella.
- WTF Reindeer Lady
A female mannequin with a reindeer’s head, wearing what appears to be a corset, a tutu, full-length gloves and a white beehive.
- Location, Location, Location
As near as I can tell, all they sell are iPod/iPhone accessories. But they’re right across from the Apple Store.
- Southcoast of Borg
We are South Coast Plaza of Borg. You will be overstimulated! After only 20 minutes at the mall on Saturday, I was already feeling overwhelmed.
- Macy’s Domestic Water
Okay, obviously, these valves control the water for Macy’s, …but why Macy’s *domestic* water? Is there another pipe for foreign water?
- Errand Observations
The Spectrum food court has ripped out the planters. I guess they realized they needed the floor space after they chopped off one end. It’s Halloween, so Target has the Christmas decorations up!
- Eye See You
Optometrist sign with a giant eyeball.
- Powerless at the Mall
How an outdoor mall dealt with a lunchtime power outage. And some Apple observations.
- South Coast Plaza Garden Show
We went to the mall during their spring garden show, with vendors taking up nearly all the hall space of one wing to show off plants, tools, decorations, etc.
- Stealth Mime
Today I saw a guy dressed like a mime, standing by an actual glass wall.
- Mall Crush
Must remember: just because the mall is the CLOSEST place to grab lunch doesn’t make it the BEST place, esp. 3 days before Christmas.
- Christmas Shopping
Need to sleep. Found myself typing “Satan Claus” by mistake. Symptom of car culture: I almost feel like I have to justify crossing the street on foot to go to another store instead of moving the car. Sun Halo. All you have to do is look up once in a while. Linens & Things: Nothing […]
- Shopping Observations
Can we get a moratorium on covers of “Last Christmas?” Actually, can we get one on the original too? Funny how easy it is to spot a cover by Darryl K. Sweet. It makes me want to mash up Xanth, WOT, and every other fantasy series he’s covered I can’t see giving someone Countdown to […]
- iPhone iLine
I went by the Spectrum for lunch, and the line to get into the Apple Store for the new iPhone was still stretched past several storefronts into the nearest courtyard, right up to the fountain by the carousel — even though they’d launched that morning. Actually, I had several co-workers who were late today because […]
- iCampers across the Spectrum
Since I was going to the Irvine Spectrum for lunch anyway, I figured I’d drop by the Apple Store and see how many people were there for the iPhone launch. I walked by around 1:50pm, about 4 hours before the event, and sure enough there were a bunch of people lined up all along the […]
- Star of Damocles
For various reasons, braved the crowds at South Coast Plaza yesterday. Oddly, it’s the easiest mall I’ve parked at all weekend. Getting to the Marketplace was a disaster, but that’s just because the streets are wholly inadequate to get cars in and out of the parking lot, and the Village (formerly the Mall of Orange) […]
- Swimming in Christmas Trees
The Macy’s in the Laguna Hills Mall has a small storefront for seasonal products. In the lead-up to Christmas it’s full of decorations, ornaments, wrapping paper, and such. During the summer, it was swimwear. (I’m not sure what they use it for in winter.) I walked by today, and they seem to be in transition: […]
